Helping After Sandy

Having grown up on the Jersey Shore, it was tough to watch CNN and see the twisted, semi-submerged, remains of the roller coaster I used to ride in my summers in Seaside Heights.

This weekend, my mom, in her eighties, was sharing a cup of coffee with us, unable to return to her home in Red Bank after a week of no power or heat.  When we opened The New York Times on Sunday, there was a front-page photograph of cars up to their windshields in sand on Long Beach Island, NY, two blocks from her sister’s house; another place filled with memories of fishing trips and body surfing.

The devastation is hard to comprehend.
